Most air conditioning repair calls in Ocala come in the same three months and sound the same: the house will not get below 78, the air from the vents feels damp, or the unit outside is running and the one inside is not. In Marion County the cooling season runs from March into November, the system cycles thousands of times a year, and the parts that give up are predictable: capacitors cooked by a summer of 95-degree afternoons, contactors pitted from all that cycling, condensate drains choked with the algae that grows in any warm, wet pipe, and coils that have been leaking refrigerant slowly for a year before anyone noticed.

Our repair visit starts with a diagnosis and a price, in that order, before a single part comes off the truck. You get a flat-rate figure for the fix in writing, a photo of the failed part, and a plain explanation of whether this repair buys the system another five years or another five weeks. If the honest answer is that the money belongs in a new system, we say so and stop; nobody on our crew is paid to sell you the bigger ticket.

What a repair visit looks like

In order, every time. The point of the sequence is that you never authorize work you have not seen a price for.

  1. We call before we arrive You get a call or text with the technician's name and an arrival window that we keep. If it slips, you hear about it before it slips, not after.
  2. Shoe covers on, system off, listen first Before any tool comes out, the technician asks what you have noticed and when it started. Half of a good diagnosis is in that conversation.
  3. Diagnose with instruments, not guesses Static pressure, refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling, amp draw on the compressor and motors, capacitor microfarads against the rating, temperature split across the coil, drain line flow. Readings go on the ticket.
  4. Show you, then price it You see the failed part and the reading that condemns it. The repair is priced flat-rate from our book, in writing, before anything is replaced. If two repairs are possible, you see both.
  5. Fix it, then prove it Repair, then the system runs long enough to confirm the temperature split, the drain is flowing and the amps are where they should be. The ticket shows the before and after numbers.
  6. Tell you what is next If the coil is nine years old and the repair was a capacitor, you hear that the coil is the next likely failure and roughly where the system is in its life. No pressure, just the map.

The failures we see most in Marion County

Capacitors. The single most common no-cool call in Florida. A run capacitor sits in the outdoor unit in direct sun and simply wears out from heat; the fan or compressor hums and will not start. It is a quick fix, and a technician who tries to sell you a new system over a capacitor is someone to stop dealing with.

Clogged condensate drains. A Florida air handler pulls gallons of water out of the air every day and sends it down a PVC line that grows algae. When it clogs, the float switch shuts the system down, or, on older installs without one, the water finds the ceiling. We clear the line, treat it, and make sure the overflow protection the Florida Mechanical Code calls for is actually there and working.

Refrigerant leaks. Low charge shows up as a system that runs constantly, ices the indoor coil, and never quite catches up. Topping it off is not a repair; finding the leak is. On an R-22 system, which has not been manufactured since 2020, the refrigerant alone can cost more than the repair is worth, and that is an honest conversation about replacement.

Contactors, fan motors, control boards. Cycling parts on a system that cycles constantly. These are ordinary flat-rate repairs on a system with life left, and we carry the common ones.

Ductwork, not the unit. A surprising share of "the AC is not keeping up" calls in the older Ocala neighborhoods are a leaking, crushed or undersized attic duct system pulling hot air into the return. My AC is running but blowing warm air. What is it?
Usually one of four things: a run capacitor that has failed so the outdoor fan or compressor is not actually running, a low refrigerant charge from a leak, a frozen indoor coil (often from that same low charge or a badly clogged filter), or a thermostat or control problem. All four are diagnosed with instruments in the first twenty minutes. If the coil is iced, turn the system to "fan only" so it can thaw before we arrive; it makes the visit faster.
How long do AC units last in Florida?
Less than the national figure. A system in Ocala runs nine or ten months a year and cycles far more than one in a northern climate, so ten to fifteen years is a realistic life for a well-maintained system here, and the ones that reach the top of that range are the ones that had a real tune-up every year and a drain line that stayed clear. Salt air shortens it further near the coast, which is not a Marion County problem.
Should I repair or replace?
A rule of thumb that holds up: if the system is under ten years old and the repair is a normal wear part, repair it. If it is over twelve, still on R-22, or the failure is a compressor or an evaporator coil, the repair money is usually better spent on a new system that will also cut the electric bill. We put both numbers in front of you and tell you which one we would choose in our own house.
Do you charge to come out?
There is a diagnostic fee, quoted when you book, and it covers the instrument diagnosis and the written price. If you go ahead with the repair the same visit, the fee is applied toward it. What you will not see is a low "trip fee" followed by an invoice nobody agreed to.
Is it safe to keep running a system that is not cooling well?
A system that is short on refrigerant or running with a frozen coil can damage the compressor, which is the most expensive part in it. If it is icing, or the outdoor unit is buzzing and not starting, turn it off at the thermostat and call. If it is simply not keeping up on a hot afternoon, it is fine to leave it running until we get there.
