What to do before we arrive
If the indoor coil is iced (ice on the copper lines or the air handler, weak airflow), set the thermostat to OFF and the fan to ON. The coil needs to thaw before it can be diagnosed, and running it frozen can damage the compressor.
If the outdoor unit is buzzing or humming but the fan is not turning, turn the system off at the thermostat. That is usually a failed capacitor, and a compressor trying to start against one is the failure you do not want.
If there is water at the air handler, the drain has backed up. Turn the system off, put a towel down, and do not pour anything down the line until we see it.
If the breaker tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off; something is pulling real current and repeated resets make it worse.
Close blinds, run ceiling fans, keep doors shut. A block house holds cool for a surprisingly long time if the sun is kept out of it.
